
Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA)
MOCSA was formed in 1975 by a collaborative effort of law enforcement, medical professionals, advocates, and survivors. For over 43 years, the agency has served as the sole rape-crisis center for the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, including Jackson, Cass, Clay, and Platte counties in Missouri, and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. With an annual budget of over $5M, 75 employees, and hundreds of volunteers, MOCSA works to stop sexual violence 24 hours per day. Services include:
* a 24-hour crisis line;
* 24-hour hospital advocacy to victims during sexual assault forensic exams;
* law enforcement and criminal justice system advocacy; support, case management, crisis intervention, and counseling for rape and sexual assault victims;
* support, therapy and case management for sexually abused children and their families;
* legal assistance and representation for victims of sexual violence; therapy and supportive services to adult survivors of child sexual abuse;
* rehabilitative therapy for juvenile and court-ordered adult sex offenders; therapy to address underlying trauma and neglect for youth exhibiting sexual behavior problems referred by family court;
* school-based sexual violence prevention education programs;
* education to the general community about rape and child sexual abuse;
* public awareness and education presentations to students and the general community about sexual violence, in order to inform and identify crime victims and provide them with resources for needed services;
* specialized training to assist professionals, including police, hospital personnel and social service providers to improve treatment and the systemic response for victims;
* 40-hour volunteer training in compliance with state coalition standards; and
* specialized projects to address specific community needs, such as a recently established contract with the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN) to provide 24-hour live-answer crisis-line support in Spanish for victims with Limited English Proficiency.
