On a dark and rainy road in northwest Indiana, two brothers, a pair of small, all white, American Eskimo dogs, about 14 lbs. each, their names Jackson and Jordan. A good Samaritan rescuer was driving down that same road and found Jordan covering up Jackson in the middle of the road. She without hesitation, jumped out of car and scooped the two up and transported them to her nearby vet. Jackson was apparently hit by a car and his hip was broken in a several places; Jordan was unhurt. Jackson required several complicated operations including a new titanium hip.
Our small home rescue organization in Cheney, Washington, The Last Road Dog, which is an IRS 501(c) 3 public charity (animal welfare and anti-cruelty organization) and is registered with the Charities Program of the Washington Secretary of State. Registration #: 2000981. We rescue dogs, cats, and horses that otherwise would probably never get adopted and are often forgotten because of varied ailments or behavioral issues. TLRD loves these guys and gals. We provide them a home for the remainder of their lives and they too become a part of our family. We often take animals from other rescue and welfare organizations to relive their populations and allow them to rescue and adopt out the more adoptable dogs, cats and horses.
Our Managing Director was contacted by the rescuer, and he agreed to pay for all of Jackson’s medical expenses and all the expenses for the cost to care for both Jordan and Jackson (almost $10,00). He also agreed to drive from our facility in Cheney, Washington to Indiana to pick up the pair and bring them home to The Last Road Dog to become part of our family, together, for the rest of their lives. To complicate matters, our director had to continue driving on to Baltimore, Maryland to pick up another rescue, Zoey. Zoey had behavioral problems relating to nipping children outside her family. Our director picked up Zoey, while leaving the Jordan and Jackson, with their rescuer and picked them up on the way home. After a tearful goodbye with her family in Baltimore, Zoey, and two dogs from TLRD (Demurri an all-black German Shepard, a former puppy mill mother; and Jenny, a wolfdog hi-bred from Best Friends) headed back home.
The crew stopped at hotel in Indiana on July 4th always a tough day for dogs, as our Director later was heard to say, Portage, Indiana must be the fireworks capital of the world, there were fireworks all night long and even the next morning at 6 am near the local dog park.
After another tearful goodbye with their rescuer, Jackson and Jordan, loaded up and all 5 dogs finally headed home. The journey took another 3 days and the crew stopped periodically at dogs across the west until they finally arrived home at The Last Road Dog, where they were greeted by Sara, a 10-year Pomeranian rescued from a puppy mill, after 5,000 miles on the road.
